Ask Yourself This.

Each week I send an email with a question to get you thinking.

The best part? There are no wrong answers.

Have a read and see where it takes you. I hope you like it.

If a non-newsy newsletter is released in the forest, does it make a sound?

I'm still working on a name for this weekly missive, if only to reconcile the title with its function. I don't turn to the Wall Street Journal for cow videos (obviously I have Instagram for that) and similarly, you don't come here for facts and figures.

Which brings me to my question this week.

How do you want to be seen?

Whether you're an executive at a corporation or the executive of your household, I can't tell you what that role should look like. But if you want to be seen as good at what you do -- effective leader, clear communicator, sound decision maker -- what actions are you taking to support this?

The same question can be applied to the roles in your personal life. How do you want to be seen as a parent, partner, neighbor, or friend? Are you a good listener, loyal confidant, honest-but-gentle opinion-giver?  Be honest. What behaviors can you point to that paint you in this light?

Full disclosure, I can tell you that my own transition from a global leadership role to that of self-employed, work-from-home coach was a big personal shift, and came with a steep learning curve. Among other changes, it requires me to network in new directions and put myself out there as a Coach, hence this weekly [insert new newsletter name here]. In other words, I've been there too, and this question has helped.

As your coach, it's not for me to say how you should be functioning in your current roles. What I can do is help you identify any disconnect between how you want to be seen and how you are behaving, or, conversely, help you identify what's working so you can build on it. Either way, it's a little bit of self-discovery, and you don't even have to leave the house!

Ready to get started? Let's do this!

There are two kinds of people in the world.

First, there are those who make a “To Do” list and include the tasks they have already completed, just for the satisfaction of crossing those items off.

And then there are the rest of you, who, let me just say, might want to give it a try.

But seriously, why not take credit for what you have already accomplished?

When thinking about what it is you want to do, do better, do differently, or stop doing altogether, ask yourself this: What steps have I already taken toward this goal?”  The answers might surprise you.

Shifting careers, moving cities, saving money, developing new fitness habits all take time, and the results don't come over night. Reminding yourself what you have already accomplished doesn't mean your work is done, just that your desired results might not be as far away as they once were.

Some people find this motivating. I know I do. Take the win, you've earned it.

As your coach, I can't also be your cheerleader. But I promise to pay close attention, enough to track your progress and measure your steps as you work toward your goals. I notice the small wins, and will be the first person to tell you to “keep it up, you're getting there.”

Are you ready? Let's get started!
